What is Instagram DM Generator?

An Instagram DM generator creates a visual mockup of an Instagram direct message conversation — the contact header, avatar, status, and a thread of message bubbles — without sending anything through Instagram. It is a mockup tool, in the same category as the Instagram Post Generator and Instagram Story Generator, used for content planning, UX prototyping, presentations, and social posts that reference a chat.

This generator reproduces the parts of the Instagram DM screen that people most often need: a header with a back arrow, avatar, username, optional verified badge and call icons; sent bubbles in a purple-to-blue gradient and received bubbles in gray; centered date and time separators between message groups; quoted replies; image messages; a "Seen" receipt under your last message; and the message bar with its camera and microphone icons. You can edit or delete any message after adding it.

All rendering happens in your browser. No Instagram account, login, or API access is required, and no message content or uploaded image is sent anywhere.

Instagram DM dark mode: how it looks and how to turn it on

Instagram's direct messages follow the app theme, so a dark-mode DM thread has a black background, dark-gray received bubbles, white text, and muted gray status and separator text. Sent bubbles keep their purple-to-blue gradient in both themes. Toggle "Dark Mode" above to switch this generator between the two looks, and the exported PNG or JPG uses whichever you chose.

To get dark mode in real Instagram messages, on iPhone open your profile, go to Settings and privacy, then Accessibility, and choose Dark mode (On, Off, or Switch automatically). On Android, open Settings, tap Theme, and choose Dark or System default. Changing the theme in the app restyles the whole app, DMs included. This generator only reproduces the look for mockups; it never touches your account.

How This Tool Works

The DM thread is rendered as styled HTML in the browser — contact header, message bubbles, quoted replies, images, and message bar. When you export, html2canvas captures the rendered thread at 2x scale. PNG keeps the rounded corners transparent; JPG is filled with the thread's background color. Clipboard copy writes the PNG to the system clipboard through the browser's image clipboard API.

Total Privacy

All mockup rendering happens locally in your browser. Uploaded avatars, attached images, and message text are never sent to our servers, Instagram, or Meta. This tool has no connection to any Instagram API.

Usage Policy

Use this generator for mockups, parody, teaching, design work, and private jokes. Do not use it to impersonate a real person, harass or defame anyone, spread misinformation, or pass a fabricated chat off as evidence. Add a clear "MOCKUP" label when sharing outside a private joke or presentation context.

Does this send a real message on Instagram?

No. This tool only generates an image that looks like an Instagram DM thread. It does not connect to Instagram, does not require login, and nothing you type is delivered to anyone on the platform. It is a visual mockup, not a messaging client.

How do I make a fake Instagram DM in dark mode?

Tick "Dark Mode" in the controls panel. The thread background, bubbles, separators, and status text switch to a dark theme, and the same setting is used for the downloaded image. Untick it to get the light version.

How do I turn on dark mode in real Instagram messages?

Instagram's DMs follow the app theme. On iPhone, open your profile, go to Settings and privacy, then Accessibility, and choose Dark mode (On, Off, or Switch automatically). On Android, open Settings, tap Theme, and choose Dark. This generator only reproduces the look; it does not change anything in your account.

Can I add images, replies, and a verified badge?

Yes. Use "Attach image" to add a photo to a message, the reply dropdown to quote an earlier message, and the "Verified badge" checkbox to show the blue check next to the username. Images stay in your browser.

Can I download as JPG or copy the image?

Yes. You can download a PNG or a JPG, or use "Copy to clipboard" to paste the image straight into a chat or document. Clipboard copy needs a browser that supports image clipboard access; if yours does not, use Download instead.

Is it okay to use this to prank a friend or make a meme?

Mockups made here are for entertainment, presentations, and prototyping. If you share one, make it clear it is not a real screenshot. Presenting a fabricated conversation as genuine (for example, to harass, defame, or deceive someone) is not an appropriate use of this tool.

Can I add more than two people to the thread?

This generator is built for one-on-one DM threads (a single contact and "you"). Group chat mockups with multiple participant names are not currently supported.

Are my photos and messages uploaded to a server?

No. The avatar, attached images, and message text are only used locally in your browser to render the preview and the exported image. Nothing is uploaded.

What image size does the download produce?

The image is exported at 2x scale from the on-screen 375px-wide mockup, giving a sharp, presentation-ready file without extra configuration. Each message can be up to 1,000 characters.
